St. Patrick’s Blog
Week of October 28th, 2013

A number of St. Patrick’s students took part in an engaging visit to the War Museum on Monday, October 21st.  It is preparation for the work that our staff and students do in organizing our Remembrance Day observance next month.  We will provide more information as we get closer to November 11th.

Our grade 8 students were able to participate in the Work For You Too (WRK4U2) activity this past Wednesday.  Students visited a number of displays demonstrating the skills and information required for dozens of careers from Firefighters and Cadets to Nursing and Automotive work.  Students were also able to get some insight into the specialty focus programs run at the high school catering to specific interests.

This week all of our grade 7 students will be visiting the Baxter Conservation Centre to reinforce their current area of ecological study.  Two grade 7 classes will be travelling to the centre each day this week.

Students will be decorating homebase pumpkins this week for a contest on Thursday, and they will also be invited to dress up in appropriate costumes or orange and black colours on Thursday as well.  Students who choose not to dress up will be required to wear their uniforms.  A Halloween fashion show at lunch will determine our spookiest student at grade 7 and 8.  We have prizes for our homeroom and individual student winners.
Also on Thursday we will be having a presentation by former NHL player player John Chabot who will visit St. Patrick's Intermediate to deliver an inspirational and interactive presentation designed to motivate and inspire students.  The “Right to Play” initiative provides powerful messages from Canadian Athletic heroes, alongside stories of hope from Right To Play’s programs in Africa.

A reminder that progress report cards will be going home on Thursday this week.  Our Parent-Teacher interviews will be on November 7th from 2:00 to 4:00 and 5:00 to 7:30 pm.  Please ensure you complete the interview sheet that you receive with the report card and have your son/daughter return it to the school.  Please contact the school if an interpreter is required for your interview.

Below I have included some important information from our School Resource Officer on cellphone safety as well as Healthy Eating information from Ottawa Public Health.

Have a great week!

SMART PHONE SAFETY

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) has recently unveiled a new
program, designed to protect owners of iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Windows devices, and
to attempt to reduce thefts of such smart phones.

Protect Your Data (www.protectyourdata.ca) is a new website designed to give parents and
children information about smart phone safety and a resource to verify if a certain device has
been registered as stolen. The CWTA has also assisted in creating a National Blacklist of stolen
devices.

It is important to have your International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number handy,
stored elsewhere than on your device. Every device has its own unique IMEI, used to identify it
during the transmission of data online. To get this number, simply type *#06# into the phone
app, and the number will appear. It is important to repeat this for all smart phones in your
house, as every device’s IMEI number will be different.

Should your device be stolen, it is important to contact your wireless provider and provide
them with this number. The device will then be placed on the National Blacklist, and will not
be able to be registered by any future users, other than the original registrant. A stolen device
that has been registered on the blacklist loses most of its communication functions, and is
therefore practically unusable, and more importantly, loses almost all value on the resale
market.

If you are considering purchasing a device second-hand on classified ads sites such as Kijiji,
please ask the seller for the IMEI number and verify it on www.protectyourdata.ca to ensure it
has not been registered as stolen.

Please consider using additional security measures on your smart phone, such as a passcode
lock and enabling GPS-functions such as the “Find My iPhone” app, to deter thieves.
For further information, please visit www.protectyourdata.ca

Let’s enjoy many healthy foods!

Did you know that over half of Ottawa children and youth eat less than 5 servings of vegetables and fruit a day even though they should be getting 5-7 servings?

Vegetables and fruit have key nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fibre.  Do you need some help to boost your family’s vegetable and fruit intake? Order a Good Food Box! Good Food Boxes come in different sizes and contain fresh vegetables and fruit. There are $10, $15 and $20 boxes for sale. The $10 box feeds one person while larger boxes are great for larger households. $5 fruit bags and $25 local organic boxes are also available.
The box items change each month but usually include lettuce, potatoes, apples, carrots and onions as well as seasonal goods such as oranges, mango, squash and cucumber. Each box also contains a newsletter with nutrition information and recipe ideas.
Hungry for more? If you have questions, or would like more information visit www.ottawagoodfoodbox.ca or contact Ottawa Public Health at (613) 580-6744 or visit www.ottawa.ca/health.

St. Patrick’s Blog - Week of October 21st, 2013

St. Patrick’s Blog
Week of October 21st , 2013
We celebrated our Opening/Thanksgiving Mass this past week at St. Patrick’s.  Father Greg lead us in an examination of gratitude and a discussion around our Board theme: By our works we show our faith.  The celebration was made very special by the inclusion of a number of student volunteers from our youth group as well as our Glee Club lead by Mrs. Reilly.  In the spirit of faith celebrations, I would also like to extend our best wishes to those Muslim families in the St. Patrick’s community that celebrated Eid al-Adha this past week.
On Monday this week we have a group of students travelling to the War Museum in anticipation of our Remembrance Day observances next month.  The students and staff are looking forward to the opportunity to explore Canada’s role in activities that helped shape our country.
On November 19th St. Patrick’s students and staff will be participating in the 5th Annual 67’s School Day Hockey game.  This is a great community builder activity and we are hoping for full participation from our students.  The cost of a game ticket is $10 and Tuesday (Oct. 22nd) is the final day to bring money in to homebase teachers.  Students who are not participating will be involved in a regular academic program at the school.
Another great opportunity for our grade 8 students occurs this week.  On Wednesday morning, all grade 8 students will be participating in the WRK 4U2 (work for you too) activity at the Ernst & Young Centre by the airport.  Students are given a chance to tour through a number of different kiosks offering information about dozens of jobs.  Our vocational exploration began last week with a presentation by Skills Canada as a precursor to the WRK 4U2 event.
Have a great week!

Lockdown Drill at St. Patrick's Intermediate School

I wanted to inform our parent and guardian community that we had a lockdown drill at the school this afternoon.  This is part of the expectation that we review the procedures with students and practice the approach so that all students and staff are comfortable with the process.  Students responded extremely well, recognizing that they must be quiet, and out of the view of classroom windows and doors.  The drill emphasizes the expectation that any threat at the school would be countered with locked school areas with no sound as to alert anyone to any populated classrooms.
Our administration, with the help of a local school resource officer Kevin McHale, released each class from lockdown and placed them in a "secure school" situation where students resumed quiet classroom activities until the drill was complete.
I would like to acknowledge the cooperation on the part of students, as well as the great preparation that our teachers extended to all individuals at the school.
Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding the process.
Thank you,
Sean Kelly

St. Patrick’s Blog
Week of October 15th, 2013
I would like to wish all our parent/guardian community a happy Thanksgiving.
A number of recap’s from St. Patrick’s events from last week.  First of all, I would like to congratulate our boys and girls rugby teams on their success at their tournaments last week.  Our girls went to the semi-finals, and our boys’ team won the championship!
Last Wednesday, we had Heather from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) at the school for a presentation.  The students viewed a very compelling video highlighting the tragedy when individuals mix alcohol and driving.  Our students were challenged to bring the message to family and friends.
Our students did a great job fundraising for our Terry Fox initiative.  Together, we raised more than $5000 for the Terry Fox foundation.  Our efforts culminated in our walk on Thursday that had our classes decked out in their homebase colours.  The group looked great!
This Thursday, our grade 8’s will participate in a Skills Canada session as a precursor to our Work for You Too (Wrk4U2) day later in the month.  These opportunities encourage students to begin the discussion of what careers they may be interested in in the future.
This week we will celebrate our rescheduled Thanksgiving Mass with Father Greg.  We are looking forward to celebrating as a school community.  Any parents or guardians who are available on Friday at 10:00 am are welcome to join us.

Have a great week!

St. Patrick’s Blog
Week of October 7th, 2013
While this will be a short week for our students (staff will be participating in Professional Learning activities on Friday), we have several activities planned.
I would first like to thank the many parents who came out to our first St. Patrick`s School Council meeting this past week.  We had great representation, and we appreciate the support of those who will be helping out.  I would like to congratulate our new council members who were elected at the meeting:
·       Council Co-Chairs: Clif Brown and Cees Artz
·       Council Deputy Chair: Ruba Dajani
·       Treasurer: Maureen Godin
·       Secretary: Renee Brown
·       CSPA Representative: Sandra Monforton
·       Parent Representative: Ana Barrett

I would also like to thank all parents and guardians who supported our “Adopt a School” partnership with Chapters/Indigo – we are awaiting the results of our fundraising but expect that things went very well over the past 3 weeks! I will announce the results of the partnership once we hear back from the organizers.
Letters went out to specific students regarding our literacy and numeracy classes beginning on October 16th.  Please know that all students are invited to take part, and more information can be obtained by calling the school.  The courses are free of charge, however, parents must arrange for transportation each evening after the sessions.
We have the Mothers Against Drunk Driving group coming in to the school on Wednesday to present to our students, and finally we are continuing to have our students fundraise for our Terry Fox walk on Thursday.  While it is a challenge to continue to ask our community for funds, we recognize that when we work as a large group we can accomplish great things.  Students who have raised $25 or more will have a chance to throw a pie at a staff member of their choice on Tuesday.  The walk will take place on Thursday afternoon after a condensed schedule in the morning.

Our student leadership group has organized a spirit week to coincide with our Terry Fox activities as well.
Monday: Pyjama and Crazy Hair Day
Tuesday: Twin day (dress up with someone else in your homebase)
Wednesday: Jersey day (sport your favourite team`s jersey with your uniform bottoms)
Thursday: Homebase T-shirt day (students will wear their homebase t-shirt for our Terry Fox run)
Students are reminded that if they are not participating in the spirit themes, they should arrive to school in full uniform.
